Listeners knew Silk Sonic's music would be transporting from the first whispery crescendo of "Leave the Door Open," the song that revealed the band's existence back in March. To be sure, none of these retro masters has ever kept their sources of inspiration a secret. .Paak writes and performs with ease in both '60s and '70s funk and soul sides and the '90s rap tracks that imitated them, the combined result conjuring a whirling timelessness, whether behind the mic or the drum set (sometimes both at the same time). And the phases of Mars' superstar ascension can be loosely tracked by how he dresses for his innumerable awards-show appearances: Cross Colors for new jack swing, shoulder pads for Minneapolis-sound mimicry, arrogant costume for Little Richard and Prince parodies. Their happy cribbing hasn't gone unnoticed, but it's always been a public record.
Silk Sonic for an Evening The sounds of Black pop's imperial age, when disco ruled the dance floors, funk tore up stadia, and slow tunes soundtracked personal moments all over the world. The pair uses a lot of vintage music, drawing on the most sensuous ballads and sunniest dance tunes from the late 20th century - which means there's plenty more where that came from if you like it. After passing through the door that this album unlocks, here are five old gems that listeners could enjoy.
